Adult film stars may sleep without clothes on but since the Middle Ages people have used some form of nightwear and textile advances brought choice to bedwear and nightwear that had not been possible until that moment in time.
The first nightshirts were a heavy sleeping garment styled like a man’s shirt in mini, knee or calf length with rounded hem and a slash at the side seams for mobility. They wear designed to help keep a person warm at night and it was not until house building became a science more than an art and living condition improved that nightwear started to become as playful and alluring as daywear.
Pyjamas were introduced about 1880 from India for men to wear for sleeping in instead of nightshirts. India’s hotter, more exotic climate naturally made for lighter fabrics, more colours and a greater range of styles, all of which lead us very naturally to today.
The clothes you wear in bed are designed to make you feel comfortable and sexy. At peace with who you are and how you look. This is exactly why today’s pyjamas come in such a dizzying array of styles and colours.
Do you want to do a warm, comfortable, hide-into-yourself kind of night? Go for cotton styles with loose fitting tops and bottoms. Are you ready to go to bed feeling like a princess? Silk and lace offer an irresistible combination to make you feel sexy and demure at the same time, alluring but conservatively dressed.
Are you ready to vamp it up? Nothing beats the coolness of sheer satin. Strong clean lines and slits in all the right places make it perfect for those nights when you want to feel like a sex queen.
So is it all just about style? No, not in the least. The trend in nightwear is that beyond buying just what’s out there you can mix and match things yourself.
For a tomboy, strong girl, feel wear a tank and boyshorts. This will put you in good company as a 2005 lingerie industry survey undertaken by the US lingerie manufacturer consortium revealed that 90% of college girls prefer the tank/boyshorts combination to just about everything else.
For a lazy. Easy going yet hip-hop style kind of day go for the long white-Tee look which, incidentally can be jazzed up as it now comes in a variety of colours. Finally for those days when you are not sure what to wear in bed fall back upon the trusted classic Hollywood movie star favourite look of silk button-up pyjamas.
What you wear in bed is always part of who you are and because you don’t always look the same each day your bedwear doesn’t have to either.
