Semantics are weird. Take the word ‘French’ for example. Put it in front of the word lingerie as in French lingerie and you instantly transform the notion of something which is necessary, practical and everyday into an image of sinful seduction.
A lot of it of course has to do with notions of culture, traditions, history, expectations and style and it is exactly upon the latter that we probably pin our entire notion of what French lingerie stands for.
Whereas lingerie seems designed to be either revealing or practical French Lingerie is designed to make an ordinary woman feel like a sex goddess.
Accenting curves, hiding small bulges and creating a sensual look are all part and parcel of what French lingerie designers have traditionally tried to do.
Wild patterns, daring styles and lace liberally used are just some of the aspects associated with French lingerie. Matching knickers and bra, contrasting colours that would not normally be seen together the French undergarment designers have always tried to create something lavish, stylish, sexy and comfortable.
Is it practical you will ask. Possibly not for everyday wear, but dress for a special occasion, put on French underwear when you are feeling low, need a lift for your spirit and walk down the street reveling in the delight of knowing what you have on under your clothes and the guarantee is that you will feel yourself transformed.
The French believe good underwear is too good to be constantly under cover and they’ve lavished tremendous attention to the detail of the undergarments they design. It’s no accident that underwear designed to be work as outerwear was first a fashion started in France. Nor was it accident that the use of vibrant colours in clothes that would normally be hidden from general view was also something French underwear designers favoured.
Does wearing French underwear encourage one to be sinful? Well, maybe not. The sensuous, sensual feel of fabrics, cuts and styles however do encourage a certain sense of adventure, a sense that one is special.
