We live in a culture which is shaped by celebrities and music. Madonna transformed underwear into outerwear, then the thong came in as the perfect solution to all those wanting to get rid of the pantyline look and before you knew it thongs started appearing above clothes waistlines exposed in a multitude of colours and styles which made the original intention of their appearance something of an oxymoron.
Which brings us to the fact that the in look in underwear right now is another misnomer called boyshorts (or boy shorts). It’s a misnomer because while they are shorts (comfortable, sexy, easy to wear in a dressed down French lingerie type of look) they have never been intended to be worn by boys. The name, apparently, came about because they were modeled on –you guessed it- boy shorts, but they’ve been designed and styled to be worn by women.
Given the fact that 13 per cent of women said, in a national underwear survey, that they already wear boy shorts in bed this item of bedtime apparel is about to catch up and rival the ubiquitous thong.
At the moment 28 per cent of women wear a thong in bed and choose to wear a thong when they go out. Boy shorts however are just as sexy and have the added attraction that they can raise the temperature while keeping expectations in check.
As one respondent put it: “You wear a thong and it peaks above your jeans or skirt and you’re out on a date, well, it paints a certain picture about you, you may not be comfortable with. Wear boy shorts instead and you can still look sexy as you undress without having to deal with all the misconsceptions at the beginning of the date, produced by your choice of underwear.”
The dress up by dressing down culture is not limited to boy shorts. The long white Tee, long thought to have been the favourite of adolescents is now making a resurgence thanks to its popularity with hip hop culture and its desire to look dressed down at all times.
Tee-shirts worn in bed are comfortable, airy, can be sexy, work just as well out of bed as they do in bed and for those nights in when you’re not sure which look you really want to go for they offer the perfect solution.
So if you want to dress up don’t be afraid to dress down. Thongs or boy shorts, a Tee shirt or the latest in corsets the main thing, always, in underwear is that it reflects the mood of the moment, captures a part of the inner you, makes you feel special and you are comfortable with it.
